Regresa el Pixar del que todos nos enamoramos

Monsters University es la mejor película
de Pixar desde el 2010, y es tan buena como Monsters
Inc.
Mike (Billy Crystal), comienza como un niño enanito
verde que es ignorado por todos y cuyo sueño es convertirse en un asustador
profesional. Al llegar a la universidad, Mike sigue siendo un enanito verde
ignorado por todos, pero esta vez está decidido a ser el mejor de su clase.
Claro que cuando llega a Monsters University se encuentra con Sully, un
fortachón peludo que viene de un linaje de asustadores y que “asustar” se le da
natural. Así comienza la enemistad que, todos sabemos, terminará como la mejor
amistad de todas.
Desde el 2010, cuando estrenó Toy Story 3, Pixar Animation se había dedicado a sacar filmes muy
por debajo del estándar que ellos mismos crearon. Cars 2 en el 2011 ni siquiera fue considerada a los Oscar, mientras
que Brave en el 2012 al parecer ganó
el Oscar por la “costumbre” de darle el premio a Pixar, pero realmente la
película no tiene nada que ofrecer. Así que, luego de la racha de Wall-E, Up y Toy Story 3, Pixar cayó bastante bajo, pero este verano resurge
sacando la mejor película familiar de lo que va del 2013.
Aunque contamos con el regreso de los personajes más
reconocidos como (obviamente), Mike, Sully, Randall y hasta George Sanderson
(el monstruo que se pasan afeitando en Monsters
Inc. por el 3312), esta película tiene un tono distinto a su predecesora/secuela.
Lo que Monsters Inc. llena de ternura
desde que entra el personaje de Boo hasta (literalmente), el final, University lo compensa con risas. Desde Finding Nemo no se escuchaban tantas
carcajadas en una sala de cine por un filme de Pixar.
No solo las risas son importantes, sino que tenemos la
filosofía del grito para crear energía bien presente. Inc. es sobre cuestionar lo que se cree sobre los humanos y, por
ende, lo que los monstruos hacen (asustarlos), para crear energía. Aquí no. En University el talento para asustar en lo
que da valor a un monstruo y lo más importante es asustar a los niños y no hay
nada de malo con eso. Eso es lo que diferencia una película de la otra y, es
ese simple cambio de filosofía lo que le da un tono completamente distinto.
La historia es básicamente lo que se ha visto en los
avances de la película. Sin embargo, hay varios giros inesperados que le dan
más fuerza a la película. Así que podemos decir que no han visto todo, aunque
hayan visto todos los avances y videoclips.
El final es estupendo, raro viniendo de Pixar, funciona a la perfección
cuando se piensa a profundidad y no da pie a secuelas de la precuela ni nada
por el estilo, sino que cierra todos los círculos.
Demás está decir que la animación es espectacular. La cantidad
de detalles en el pelo, escamas, piel, y hasta plumas es increíble. Pero mejor
que todo eso, la animación de las expresiones de los personajes. Los personajes
hablan sin pronunciar una palabra, solo con la manera en la que se miran. Estos
personajes no son ficción y no son computarizados, esto pasa la línea de lo
técnico y convierte a esos personajes criaturas reales. Sully es un actor
merecedor de un Oscar. Pero lo que Mike puede hacer solo con un ojo y con un cuerpo
redondo, no tiene palabras.
Algunos van a señalar que en Monsters Inc. Mike le dice a Sully, “has estado celoso de mi
apariencia desde el cuarto grado”. Sin embargo, los personajes se conocen en la
universidad. Bueno, el director Dan Scalon dijo en una entrevista que, luego de
darle pensamiento a ese problema por mucho tiempo, decidieron que la ahora
controversial frase de Mike no es otra cosa que una expresión común para
referirse a mucho tiempo. El problema es que Scalon debió utilizar eso en algún
momento de la película para así cerrar todo tipo de discusión sobre el tema, y
no lo hizo. Por lo que, a ojos de una audiencia que lo que quiere es buscarle
las cinco patas al gato, esa excusa se sentirá sacada de la manga para
justificar un “oops” de la historia.
Si eres lo suficientemente humano como para ignorar
ese ridículo e insignificante detalle, esta película es para ti. Te reirás, los
niños la amaran y te hará recordar por qué nos enamoramos de Pixar y estos
personajes hace ya 12 años.

The Pixar we all fell in love with is
back!

Monsters University is the best
Pixar film since Toy Story 3 in 2010, and as good as Monsters Inc.
Mike
(Billy Crystal), starts as a little green kid, ignored by everyone, who’s only
dream is to become a “scarer” for Monsters Inc. When we grew up, he’s still a
little green guy ignored by everyone, but this time he is attending to Monsters
University to become a real “scarer”. Once he’s there he meets Sully (John
Goodman), a big blue guy that can scare everyone just by being him. And so, the
rivalry begins, and is going to end up (as we all know), as one of the biggest
friendship ever.
After
Toy Story 3, Pixar Animation has been
doing films that got short for the standards make by them. Cars 2 in 2011 didn’t make it to the final round on the Academy
Awards and Brave in 2012 won that
year just because it was Pixar and they didn’t receive the Oscar the year
before, but the movie didn’t have anything special. So, after the good streak
of Wall-E, Up and Toy Story 3, Pixar
fell way too low, buy this summer they have raise up and brought the perfect
family movie of 2013 (by far).
Even
thou we are seeing some of the old characters like (obviously), Mike, Sully,
Randall and even George Sanderson (the monsters that is shaved for the 3312
alert), this movie feels different from its predecessor/sequel. What Monsters Inc. gain in sweetness with the
Boo’s character, this one compensates it with laughs. Since Finding Nemo in 2003, Pixar films has
lost a little laughs, and introduced sweetness, but in University the smiles are back.
But
it’s not only about the laughs. The whole philosophy of the world is different.
Inc. was about questioning the world they
live in and everything they know about human kids. In University, scaring a kid is a good thing and is what give value a
monster. If a monster is not scary then, what kind of monster is it? So, those
two simple things gave the movie a whole new and different vibe.
The
story is pretty much what we have seen in the trailers, but funnier. However,
there are some unexpected twists that make it a even more solid film. So, we
are safe to say that you haven’t seen it all, even if you have seen every
single trailer and clip in the internet. The ending is great, odd coming from
Pixar, it works perfectly to the story when you think about it and don’t make room
for any sequel to the prequel, because it closes every gap.
It
would be a cliché to say that the animation is amazing. This is Pixar that we’re
talking about. All the details on hair, scales, skin and even feathers are stunning.
Even better than that is the animation on the characters expression. It is unbelievable.
They don’t have to say a word to send a message because with their faces they
say it all. Sully could be an Academy Award winner, but what Mike does with one
eye and a round body doesn’t have a word to be described.
Some
people will say that in Monsters Inc.
Mike says to Sully, “You have been jealous of my looks since fourth grade”. However, the characters first meet in college.
Well, director Dan Scalon said that they actually thought about that and get to
the conclusion that Mike said that as a common expression referring to a long
time period and not literally that they have meet since 4th grade.
The only problem is that to sustain that excuse they should have use it at
least one time in this film. However, we never hear such a phrase to be told by
Mike or any other character in the film. That will make those people think that
Scalon only said that excuse to safe the story.
If
you are human enough to ignore that stupid and insignificant expression, then
you will enjoy Monsters University.
You will laugh, the kids will love it and everyone will remember why they fell
in love with Pixar and this particularly characters 12 years ago.

Batman no está solo: Superman trae esperanza a DC

Olviden todas las películas que han existido de
Superman, porque después de Man of Steel,
no tendrán ojos para nada más.
Cuando el planeta Kriptón está a punto de destruirse,
el científico Jor-El (Russell Crowe), envía a su hijo recién nacido, Kal-El, a
la Tierra, para salvarlo. El general Zod (Michael Shannon), es apresado por
rebelarse contra el planeta y justo antes de ser encarcelado amenaza con
encontrar a Kal-El. 33 años más tarde, Clark Kent (Henry Cavill), es un hombre
que nunca ha logrado encajar y nunca se queda mucho tiempo en el mismo sitio.
Clark ha vivido buscando su origen e intentando descubrir el propósito por el
que fue enviado a l Tierra.
Lo prometido es deuda y podemos decir que los
productores lograron realizar la película de Superman que prometieron. Por años
(desde el desastre del 2006), Warner Bros. ha intentado traer de regreso al
súper héroe más grande de los comics y no habían podido encontrar la manera.
Fueron Christopher Nolan y David S. Goyer los que (mientras realizaban The Dark Knight Rises), lograron
concretar la visión del Superman realista. La seriedad de la historia, lo
profundo de la pena que carga Clark y el gran espectáculo de entretenimiento
gritan Nolan por todas partes. No hay duda en la mente de nadie (porque así lo
han declarado Goyer y el director Zack Snyder), que sin Christopher Nolan este
proyecto no hubiera sido posible.
El libreto, basado en la historia creada por Nolan, estuvo
a cargo de David Goyer. Debo señalar que este es el mejor libreto que el
escritor ha realizado por su cuenta. Lo único realmente decente en la carrera
de Goyer ha sido la trilogía de Dark
Knight y en todas trabajó el libreto junto a Nolan. Si mencionamos algunas
historias que Goyer ha hecho por su cuenta podemos ver desastres como, The Unborn o Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Pero esta vez, Goyer deja atrás
todo lo que se ha dicho de él y logra escribir el guión más maduro, serio y
lleno de acción de su carrera.
Y entonces entra Zack Snyder al panorama. Siendo fiel
al odio por todas y cada una de las películas dirigidas por Snyder, la decisión
de que él hiciera esta película me puso de nervios. Toda mi fe estuvo entonces
en Nolan. Pero es un placer para mí decir que Snyder cambió su estilo
cinematográfico para esta película. Para variar, cumplió su promesa de no hacer
tomas en cámara lenta (no hay ni una en toda la película). El tema de la
película es, ¿qué pasaría si esto ocurriera mañana? Con ese mismo pensamiento,
los tiros son bruscos, mucho “handheld”, y temblores de cámara. Esto hace que
la audiencia sienta que está dentro de la acción. Acción, que está dirigida con
mucho éxito. Hay vuelos, visión de calor, puños, sangre, todo lo que no se
había visto de Superman antes. Es difícil seguir la cinematografía por lo
rápida y brusca que es, pero definitivamente es el tono adecuado.
No hay nada mejor para acompañar una buena historia,
con buena dirección, que una buena música. El maestro Hans Zimmer lo logró de
nuevo. Lo primero que hizo fue no intentar imitar a John Williams. Man of Steel tiene su propia melodía,
sentimental, y presente todo el tiempo. Constantemente se repite el mismo
patrón de notas, que deja claro que esa es la música por la que será recordado
el Superman de Zack Snyder y Henry Cavill.
Para ponerle la cereza al pastel, vino el mejor elenco
que ha sido ensamblado para una película de súper héroes. Olviden Avengers, X-men o cualquier otra, Man
of Steel tiene a los mejores. Henry Cavill me preocupó cuando hizo Immortals, pero el sujeto demostró ser
el perfecto Superman y Clark Kent. Los Supermans anteriores han sido perfectos
Clark, pero para nada buenos Kal-El. Cavill es perfecto como ambos. Es un tipo
serio, fuerte pero con una mirada de melancolía por no ser aceptado. Hizo un
excelente trabajo.
Al fin tenemos una Lois Lane de la que sentirnos
orgullosos. Amy Adams deja atrás a la reportera intrépida que se mete en
problemas de los que no puede salir y sin sentido de moralidad a la hora de
escribir. Esta Lois es fuerte, es independiente y tiene buen corazón. El
personaje que más me preocupaba era Jonathan Kent. Luego de ver la serie Smallville me di cuenta de la
importancia de Jonathan, ya que sin él, Superman no sería lo que es. Kevin
Costner era el hombre perfecto. Es el tipo de actuación que te hace pensar, “yo
quiero un papá así”. Todo lo bueno que
hay en Clark es producto de ese hombre.
Russell Crowe logra hacer desaparecer la imagen
sobrevalorada de Marlon Brando como Jor-El. Olviden a Brandon, Crowe es un
Jor-El que no tiene miedo, pelea, defiende a su familia y está ahí para
convertir a Clark en Superman. El resto de elenco incluye a Diane Lane como
Martha Kent, a Laurence Fishburne como Perry White y Michael Shannon como Zod.
Todos igualmente poderosos. Shannon logra poner al general Zod al mismo nivel
que Superman. Es el contrincante perfecto, lleno de maldad, pero una maldad que
se justifica hasta cierto punto.
Si quieren que les diga algo negativo, les diré que en
cierto punto parece que la película se va a caer. Todo va bien, pero de repente parece que el ritmo se va para el piso, pero
para sorpresa de todos, es justo cuando la acción comienza y no termina hasta
que salen los créditos.
Man of Steel es la película
perfecta del verano 2013, llena de acción, pero más importante aún, llena de
sentimiento. No pueden perdérsela.

The Dark Knight is not alone: Superman
brings hope to DC

Forget
every Superman movie, because after seeing Man
of Steel, you will have eyes none of them.
When
planet Krypton is about to die, scientist Jor-El (Russell Crowe), send his only
son to planet Earth, to save him. General Zod (Michael Shannon), is sentence to
the Phantom Zone after rebelling to the Planet, and in the end he promise he
will find Kal-El and the thing that travel with him. 33 years later, young man
Clark Kent tries to fit in, but he never stays too much time on the same place.
Clark has spend all his life trying to understand why he can do the things he
can, and with what purpose he has been sent to Earth.
A
promise is a promise and the produced have said the truth, they delivered the
Superman movie they said they would. For years Warner Bros. has tried to bring
back the greatest hero of all, and it was David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan
the ones that find out how to do it. The seriousness of the story, the depth in
Clarks feeling and the entertained spectacle they bring in screams Chris Nolan
everywhere. There is no doubt (and Goyer and director Zack Snyder has said so),
that without Nolan, this movie couldn’t be possible.
The
script, based on the story by Nolan, is the first great script by David S.
Goyer. Everything this guy has done is dumb, except for The Dark Knight trilogy and he did those with Nolan. But if you
check out some of his solo works you will see titles like The Unborn and Ghost Rider:
Spirit of Vengeance. But this time, he wrote the script alone and is his
first mature and serious work on his own. Excellent script, with no dumb lines
and shallow characters.
Then
enter Zack Snyder. Because I hate everything this guy has done, I was very nervous
of him directing this movie. I told to myself “In Nolan I trust”, so if Nolan chooses
this one, then he could do the job. Thank God Snyder decided to change his
style for Man of Steel. He promised
in the beginning there will be no slow motion scenes, and there are none. The
cinematographic style goes with the premise, “what if this happens tomorrow?” It
has a lot of handheld shots, very fast and brutal. It must be a 3D nightmare,
but if fit perfect in the mood of the movie. Snyder proved he can do better
than he has done in the past.
What
is an awesome story, beautifully directed without an amazing score? Hans Zimmer
proves he is the master. The best he did was not trying to imitate John
Williams. Zimmer comes with a different score, full of emotion, and with a
simple melody he makes a statement: “This is a new Superman, and this is his
song”. Music is very present during the movie and it will be as memorable as
the original John William score.
The
cherry of the pie came with the cast. There is no superhero movie with a better
cast than this one. No Avenger or X-men can be compared with this cast.
First there is Henry Cavill. After Immortals
I had my doubts about him, but make no mistake, this guy was born for this
roll. All previously actors, were the perfect Clark Kent, but Cavill is the
perfect Clark and Superman. He is big and strong, but at the same time has this
sad face, full with the pain of not being part of this world.
Finally
we can enjoy a Lois Lane that is not a damsel in distress. Amy Adams is strong
and independent. She might get in some big trouble, but she definitely can
defend herself. With her it is Michal Shannon. Who would think that man could
be a good bad guy? Well, he is. He is as strong as Superman and he is
dangerous, he have no mercy and is capable of destroy the whole planet if
Superman let him.
The
character I feared most was Jonathan Kent. After seeing TV series Smallville I understand that Jonathan has
to be a strong man, but honest. He is the man responsible that Clark is the
good man he is. He raised him, and teaches him about good and evil. Kevin
Costner is a good dad. He is solid on his position and very honest. He brings
to life the kind of character makes you think: “I want him to be my dad”. Well,
he is Superman dad. The other dad is Russell Crowe and he’ll make you forget
the ghost of Marlon Brandon. I like this Jor-El better. He is not just a voice,
but a presence. He is there teaching his son who he is and what is the purpose
of being sent to Earth.
Even
thou this is a realistic look at Superman, it is a solid sci-fi movie. There is
a lot of action, a lot of science fiction themes around it, and very good special
effects. At some point of the movie it feels like is going to get boring, but
never does. Just when I thought, “if you stop now it’s going to get boring”, it
was when it got better. The action starts and it never stops until the very
end.
Man of Steel is the perfect
summer movie of 2013, full of action and feelings. You can’t miss this.
