Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was a success, right? It created the hype, critics loved it, it made the money and it has a healthy 84% score in Rotten Tomatoes. But was it really a success?

I love Star Wars, grew up with it, loved The Force Awakens and get excited every time I see a new movie coming up. But to be fair, many people complaint about TFA because "it didn't have 'character development'". And yet, those same people had no issue with Rogue One having absolutely no character development and a pretty uninteresting protagonist. Jyn Erso seemed to be a great original character, but it turn out to be a missed opportunity. What made Rogue One a success or enjoyable movie is it's setting.

We have the Empire and it's prime, we have a lot of character that we last saw 30 years ago and, of course, Vader. The third act alone makes it for the other hour and a half that came before. With that said, I have a bad feeling about the upcoming Star Wars spin offs. 

LucasFilm and it's properties belongs to Disney now. So does Marvel. Marvel has been a success. Star Wars is being a success. Disney like to repeat itself. We've seen it before. Marvel might be a success. But we can all agree that all the MCU movies have the same plot with different characters and, because of that, the first one in each series is usually the best. Because when you see the same thing with the same characters for the second time it stops being good.

I know all Marvel fans will argue about Captain America, and I will argue back that first and second movies have totally different setting (which is helpful) and third one it's not a Cap's movie at all. But that's not the point. The point is: when Disney success in something they repeat themselves.

This means that the already confirmed spin off about Han Solo will feature a bunch of unimportant characters, that Han will be exactly as we remember him from A New Hope (meaning he will no evolve as a character), and more importantly, the movie will end up exactly where Luke and Old Ben Kenobi meet the smuggler. For me, this is bad news.

I want the cinematic universe of Star Wars to grow and show us things that we haven't see yet in the big screen. But seeing what Solo was up to the week before meeting Luke it's not interesting at all. This will lead, yet again, to a great finale where he outrun whatever bounty hunter is looking for him (ahem Boba Fett), just to end up in the infamous Cantina. But, what about the rest of the movie? Well, if Disney does what Disney does best, it will be a slow set up, where they'll throw a bunch of recognizable names of people and planets, see a good amount of memorable characters from previous film and have no arc for the main character whatsoever. 

I want to see Solo in action. I want to see him become the infamous smuggler. I want to see him years before A New Hope, meeting new people and gaining his reputation. Pretty much the adventure that gain him his "fame". I don't want to hear about it, I want to see it. Yes, it will be cool to see a young Mark Hamil at the end next to an aged Ewan McGregor, but seriously Disney, put some brains into it. 

The same destiny will face the yet-to-be-announced spin off that fans are hoping it to be about Boba Fett or Kenobi. The problem, again, is that if it is Fett, the ending will be right when Vader calls him to offer him the Solo job. And if it's Kenobi it will end when Ben save Luke from the sand people. It'll be a never ending gag of Star Wars movies connecting directly into another movie. Yes, it was great and worked just fine in Rogue One, but it better not happen again for future films. 

Then again, I have a bad feeling about this, and something tells me that Disney will go through the safe route and give the fan something to go bananas at the end just so they ignore how average was the rest of the movie.

DC hace historia

DC vuelve a revolvar el hormiguero con Suicide Squad. A estas alturas del año hay una batalla que Marvel perdió: sus película no son tan discutidas como las de DC. 

La opinión en las redes sociales sobre Suicide Squad (SS), está aun más dividida que la de Batman v Superman (BvS). Con BvS la mayoria de la gente dijo que era mala y otros fanáticos se levantaron a opinar por qué sí era buena. Con SS es la gente común la que la defiende. Las personas que van al cine buscando entretenimiento han salido satisfechos con el nuevo filme de DC y son los llamados "fanboys", los que se han estado quejando.

Hemos escuchado que no hay desarrollo de personajes, como si las películas de acción necesitaran alguno. Mad Max el año pasado no tuvo ningún desarrollo de personajes ni historia y los críticos la amaron. Guardians of the Galaxy solo trabajó por encima a Star Lord en el 2014 y pareció funcionar. Aun más, Captain America: Civil War no fue ni un filme del Capitán América ni una guerra civil. Entonces, ¿por qué DC tiene que entregar algo diferente?

Hemos escuchado quejas de una mala edición. Como si la mayoría de la personas supieran qué significa eso. La edición debe llevar un ritmo y claridad para contar la historia. Una mala edición fue la de Jason Bourne, cuyas secuencias de acción no se podían apreciar. Incluso necesitaron mostar un GPS para que la audiencia supiera por donde iba corriendo motora Matt Damon. Mala edición fueron las escenas de Lagos y el escape de Bucky en Civil Wars. Mucho corre y corre pero la audiencia no sabia quién corría, de quién huían o a quién golpeaban. Entonces, si la acción de SS era entendible, ¿por qué la criticamos? Más aún, si soportamos a Jason Bourne, Civil War y Age of Ultron, ¿por qué somos tan "picky" con DC?

¿El filme no tuvo suficiente Joker? El Joker no es parte del Suicide Squad. Y si él hubiese sido el villano Batman hubiera sido el héroe. ¿Los cameos de Flash y Batman fueron malgastados? Todos los cameos lo son. No es como que Stan Lee hace mucho con los suyos. ¿La escena del final no sirve? Porque a todos nos encantó ver a los Avengers comiendo shawarma y ver película tras película a Thanos sentado en una silla. ¿Diálogo "corny"? Sí, porque Steve Rogers habla como Shakespeare, Tony Stark como Cervantes y T'Challa como Nelson Mandela. La línea de Steve "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn", es tan corny que la pusieron en una estatua. 

Al final tenemos un estudio de Hollywood que no sabe cómo satisfacer a los fans  porque los fans no saben qué quieren. Si la vara es Heath Ledger y The Dark Knight, entonces todas las películas de super héroes desde el 2008 han sido basufa porque ninguna le llega a los talones. Si quieren TDK, pues pongan el blu ray todo lo que quieran porque ese tipo de filmes no salen amenudo de las historietas cómicas.

El punto no es odiar Marvel. Marvel es genial, sus películas son entretenidas y dignas de ver. Pero estan lejos de ser perfectas y todos las alaban. El punto es dejar la hipocresía a un lado y juzgar las películas por lo que son. "Comic book movies?" No son más que entretenimiento y Suicide Squad brindó mucho de eso. El que no quiera verlo se miente a sí mismo.

"House of Cards is wasted in Netflix". That's the conclusion a co-worker and I got to after giving up to the hype and started watching the award winning series. 

A little over a year ago, when HBO release their HBO Now streaming service, HBO CEO Richard Plepler said about binge watching: "There is something very powerful about having a conversation in the culture occurring for 10 weeks[...]". That day he put words to my thought and reserves about binge watching TV shows on the streaming platforms. 

Yes, it's good to be able to catch up with our favorite shows all at once but, what are we missing with this? Right now we are at the top of the hype with "Game of Thrones". Episode nine is coming and we all know what that means. And here we are, waiting for it. These are, probably, the best ten weeks of the year. Every Monday morning when I get to work I spend at least half an hour talking what happened the previous night on the show. I can't wait to meet with my co-workers and talk about theories of what may come next.

That is the conversation Plepler was talking about. Annoying everyone in social media with post about the show. Talking to strangers on Starbucks because you heard them talking about your show and you want to exchange arguments. TV really can bring people together. But that doesn't happen with the Netflix culture.

Netflix shows are great, there is no denying. But we all watch them at a different pace. And with this we can't talk about the last episode we saw because we might spoil the show to others. Now, some series are not that great and the best thing you can do is to watch all episodes in one seat. That way you can enjoy them better. Good shows like "Bloodline" or "Frankie and Grace", are better if you binge watch them on a weekend. Because they lack the excitement of bringing back the viewers. And when you analyze the whole thing as one, they happen to be good.

Then you have other cases like "House of Cards" and "Daredevil". These are shows that every episode is better than the last one and in every one of them there is a twist or an event that move forward the story. Then again, when we watch them we can't call our best friend or our brother because he was busy that day and didn't watch it. Or even worse, he or she already watch it and will reply to you something like "oh just wait to see what happens next". I don't care next! I care now! I want to discuss what I just saw and analyze it and enjoy the little twist or the backstabbing wound.

This is the best era to watch TV series. We are getting good ones. But when they stream all episodes the same day they are depriving the viewership of the conversation. We can't talk the shows until the other person has finish it and by then you probably forgot the best parts of every single episode. Then we say "oh yes, it was an awesome season", but that's about it. No details, no anxiety for whats coming next, no speculation.

At the end, we just watch it on our own for ourselves, our enjoyment and we forgot about how one show can unite people. So I go back to my initial statement, "House of Cards" is wasted on Netflix. Because all episodes are so well written and acted that it's worth it to wait a little bit to enjoy the plot twist, to talk about how Frank Underwood can get away with this one. We could have had 13 weeks a year of talking about "House of Cards", just like we talk about "Game of Thrones". Instead I'm here ready and excited to watch episode 4 of season four and you're probably thinking "Oh, wait till you see wham happens next". And to I say: just imagine the conversation we could just have about that last episode.

Vida al género del romance

El filme romántico del verano perfecto para parejas. 

Lou Clark (Emilia Clarke), es una joven que, como muchos en el mundo, se ve en necesidad de un nuevo trabajo. Así conoce a los Traynor, una familia rica que necesitan de alguien que cuide a su hijo Will (Sam Claflin), quien está en un sillón de ruedas paralizado del cuello hacia abajo. Así empieza una amistad que más que ser por cuidado se convierte en una motivación para vivir.

Lo mejor de este filme es que rompe con varios clichés y solo usa los mejores, aquellos que funcionan para esta historia. Quedé enamorado desde el principio, pues el filme no pierde tiempo en llegar a lo que la audiencia espera. Chico rico tiene accidente, chica pobre necesita trabajo, chica pobre consigue trabajo cuidando al chico rico. Todo esto ocurre en menos de 10 minutos, lo que mantiene el ritmo adecuado para entretener a la audiencia. 

Es imposible no gustarle los personajes. Sam Claflin finalmente muestra facetas más allá del niño bonito y Emilia Clarke se separó de la mujer fuerte que todo lo sabe que la ha caracterizado en "Game of Thrones" y "Terminator: Genysis". Lou es inocente y divertida mientras que Will es sarcástico y amargado. Incluso Charles Dance es un personaje diferente al villano controlador que ha caracterizado su carrera. 

La historia en sí es muy linda e incluso hasta realista. Más que un amorío, esta es la historia de una amistad. Como dos personajes se ayudan mutuamete a volverse mejor personas. Incluso podriamos llamar a su amor uno platónico. Mantiene los pies en la tierra y en ningún momento te hace pensar "solo eso pasa en películas". 

La producción es excelente. La fotografía captura a la Inglaterra rural de una manera hermosa. La selección musical es evidente que fue para capturar el voto popular. Ed Sheeran hizo su agosto con este filme. 

En cuanto a llanto, hay varios críticos diciendo que te hará llorar. Por mucho que me agradaron los personajes y por emotiva que fue la historia, lágrimas fue lo único que faltó en el rostro de este crítico. 

Si hay espacio en sus corazones para una película romantica o "fresita", como decimos en casa, no dejen de ver "Me Before You". 

Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: The Third 'Avengers'

“Captain America” toma el subtítulo “Civil War” cuando debió haber sido “Avengers 3”.

Luego de los eventos de las primeras dos entregas de los Vengadores y una misión mal hecha al comienzo de esta, los gobiernos del mundo deciden que el grupo de superhéroes no debe seguir trabajando sin supervisión. Esta decisión hace que los miembros del equipo se dividan entre los que apoyan esta medida y los que no, creando un conflicto bélico que amenaza con destruir todo lo que unidos han logrado.

La respuesta a la pregunta de los cinco mil dólares es “si”, “Captain America: Civil War” es una buena película. Cumple la misión de entretener, llevar una historia interesante y traer mucha acción. Su mejor cualidad es dejar que cada personaje brille. Por otro lado, esto crea un conflicto, Capitán América no es el personaje principal de esta historia. Por definición el protagonista es el personaje que tiene un viaje y cambia durante el mismo. Steve Rogers no es ni uno ni el otro. Este es el viaje de James “Bucky” Barnes y el personaje que cambia es Tony Stark. Esta es la razón principal por la que la película está mal titulada.

Daniel Bruhl es uno de los villanos de esta historia y, aunque no va a ser un villano memorable porque no tiene súper poderes ni un traje tecnológico, pero tiene algo que muchos otros villanos de Marvel carecen, un motivo. Entre los personajes nuevos también esta Chadwick Boseman, quien interpreta a “Black Panther”. Sin duda se convertirá en un favorito de los fanáticos porque está muy bien escrito y muy bien actuado. Finalmente, un superhéroe negro que brilla con luz propia después de la desilusión de “War Machine”. Y por supuesto, Tom Holland es Spider-Man. Luego de que Sony y Marvel llegaran a un acuerdo para combinar universos tenemos el tercer Hombre Araña en 14 años. Es joven, gracioso y ya fue mordido por la araña radioactiva así que llega directo a la acción.

En honor a la verdad, el filme no es perfecto. La edición y el trabajo de cámara de las primeras secuencias de acción son un asco. No se sabe qué está sucediendo o quien va ganando. El personaje de Crossbones completamente desperdiciado. Y uno que otro momento el medio en que la historia pierde su ritmo. Muchos la están llamando “la mejor película de Marvel” pero yo le daría un seguro cuarto lugar. Digan lo que digan, “Iron Man”, “The Avengers” y “The Incredible Hulk” siguen siendo mejores (sí, “The Incredible Hulk” está en el Top 3).

Para cerrar, finalmente Marvel hace escenas post-créditos que valen la pena. No es Thanos no haciendo nada, Howard the Duck sentado en una esquina ni mucho menos el grupo comiendo shawarma”. Civil War es un must-see del verano.

Y se callaron la boca.

La batalla más esperada del año es secuela de “Man of Steel” a la vez que el inicio del universo extendido de DC (DCEU).

Dieciocho meses después de la batalla contra Zod en Metropolis, Superman (Henry Cavill), no sabe dónde encaja en este mundo que tiene opiniones divididas sobre él. A su vez, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck), está desesperado por encontrar la manera de detener al kryptoniano que representa una amenaza para el planeta. Es dentro de esta situación que Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) empieza a mover su maquinaria para desarrollar su malévolo plan.

Un verdadero fan de los comics sabe que cada héroe es diferente y por tal razón cada adaptación será diferente. Dicho esto, hay que tener claro que DC no es Marvel y al tener personajes diferentes sus películas tienen derecho a ser diferentes. Eso no las hace malas ni buenas, solo diferentes. Esa declaración fue evidente en “Man of Steel”, pero parece que después de 3 años los “fans” parecen necesitar ser recordados de este hecho.

El director Zack Snyder se va “full Snyder” durante el primer acto de este filme. Sí, esto significa un poco de acción, un buen “soundtrack” y muchos “slow motion”. Un buen filme de acción tiene acción de principio a fin, pero un buen filme se toma su tiempo en desarrollar una historia, re-introducir personajes, traer a personajes nuevos, abre las puertas al nuevo universo y entonces explota en acción hasta que el público queda satisfecho a tal nivel que no hay necesidad de dejar algo extra post créditos. Porque aceptémoslo, todo lo que querías ver lo viste en los 150 minutos que duró el filme.

A lo que todos quieren saber, Ben Affleck es el perfecto Batman. No, no es mejor que Christian Bale. No, Christian Bale no es mejor que Affleck. El punto en la vida de Bruce Wayne donde lo encontramos es uno a donde no llegó Bale, así que no pueden ser comparados. Unos dirían que los dioses crearon a Ben Affleck para ser el perfecto Wayne, y tal vez tienen razón. Así que supérenlo, Ben Affleck es Batman. Si son de aquellos de mente cerrada que no les gustó la actuación de Henry Cavill como Superman, no hay mucho que se pueda hacer por ustedes así que a lo que sigue. Quien se lleva el premio aquí es el Lex Luthor de Jesse Eisenberg. Mucha gente dudó, mucha gente se rio, mucha gente quedó mal. La mejor manera de describirlo es como el Joffrey de DC. Un personaje que amas odiar con todo tu corazón y no puedes sentir nada más que odio hacia él.

El mercadeo de esta película tal vez mostró más de lo que debía, pero no lo mostró todo y no crean saber cómo acabará la historia porque podrían equivocarse. Lo que sí podemos decir es que este filme será objeto de controversia en las próximas semanas porque se atrevieron a ir a donde nadie ha ido todavía y no todos lo podrán entender. Mi sugerencia es, si no es muy fan de comics y no conoce todos los fenómenos que podrían ocurrir en este tipo de universo, vayan acompañados de alguien que sí para que entiendan mejor.
